September 6, 2011 Isabelle Rebecca – 5 Years Old!
It’s hard for me to believe that five years has passed since she entered our lives. In spite of my befuddlement, yesterday was still Isabelle’s 5th birthday. To celebrate, Melissa and I planned a full day with our little big girl.
The morning started with chocolate centered crescent rolls (Iz’s request) for breakfast. She’s pretty hip to the b-day concept of getting her way, so next up was movie-time. I dozed off thanks to a Benadryl. When I woke, it was time to start planning our picnic. This involved grilling some zucchini for some sandwiches (more on that later). We bought a picnic basket awhile back and this was our first opportunity to use it.
There is a park not that far from our house that had an obliging field. It was my first time taking the girls there and I was impressed by the playground. We ate first, much to the chagrin of our children. It was nice to sit and eat on the blanket. Even if we kept hearing, “can we go play now?” after nearly every bite.
Eventually, the kids made it to the playground. Not certain if it was her turning 5, but Iz definitely had a more adventurous spirit. She climbed a rope ladder, rock wall – basically anything that stood in between her and the slides. Mads of course was right there with her “taking it out and chipping it up” as Royal Tenenbaum would say.
Before heading back home we took the girls on a short hike on the nature trail within the park. Mads was gung-ho to keep going but the birthday girl wanted to get back home. Now I have an appointment to take Madison back on the trail to complete the hike next week.
Back at home, I started prepping a roast chicken. Again it was requested by Isabelle for dinner. I was bashing up herbs while Melissa Izzy got ready for her portrait. As mentioned previously I bought some lamps for this purpose.
This was a highlight of my day. Melissa put some light makeup on her face (which made her feel special) and straightened her hair. Plus, she was wearing the birthday dress Isabelle picked out a month ago.
After a tasty dinner, we brought out her birthday cupcake (or fairy cake as the girls like to say). We sang “happy birthday,” she blurted out her wish and then made a couple of attempts at blowing out the candle before being successful.
The evening ended with Isabelle riding her new Radio Flyer scooter back and forth through the kitchen. Well, anywhere she went actually. I think if we’d let her sleep with it she’d have been happy.
It was a great day. I’m so proud to call this smart, beautiful, little “big” girl my daughter.
